Borg uses deduplication and compression. When you back up the same files repeatedly (as you do with daily snapshots), only the changes are stored. A 500 GB repo can easily hold weeks of daily snapshots for a system with hundreds of gigabytes of data. You get far more usable backup history than the raw number suggests.
